I recently shot actress Amalia Santamaria, a mutual friend got us in touch to do a headshot session. I hadn’t really ever worked with an actress before but it was really great! It’s fun to see how they can change their expressions so quickly and accurately. Amalia was very sweet and did an outstanding job despite saying she wasn’t very good at photo sessions. The makeup artist Gio Torres was amazing and was always prepared when we needed to touch up hair or makeup and the look changes were on point.
I wanted the lighting to be clean and high-key so there wouldn’t be any distractions from Amalia’s face which is the whole idea behind a headshot, showing a character as opposed to clothing in fashion. I used a fairly simple two light setup, an octabox camera right angled slightly downward and another light behind her to the left with only a reflector to the wall and the center of the light aimed to where her head would be on the wall, i flagged the background light with a white styrofoam which also gave a bit of backlight without any flare.
